Comedy that does not play in the same sand-box as anything the is a known sin issue for many people. Almost anything is a sin issue, but there are biggies, like sex, drugs, alcohol, etc ...
Good point! There are many topics that can be deemed sinful like you note. However their treatment and portrayal can cause them to become an endorsement of sin, or not. Take alcohol for example. God doesn’t say alcohol is bad. The Bible says don’t drink as a drunkard. If comedy makes alcohol out to be the solution to problems, comedy has endorsed idolatry. If comedy lampoons alcohol or an alcohol scenario making fun of it is that sinful?
Your question brings into focus something for me that goes in “violation” of the doctrine of many Christians. I personally believe that a specific act and the thoughts surrounding it can be sinful for some and not for others.
The way I read it, as described by Christ in the Sermon on the Mount, sin is not nearly as much an action as it is the thoughts surrounding the action. For example, two women (let’s go with women, since I am one) can look at the same attractive man, and the one sins (lusts with the intention of acting on it if the possibility arises) while the other doesn’t (has no sexual reaction, or has a momentary physical reaction, but redirects her thoughts). I believe all sin is like this.
If I know that you are struggling to quit smoking (arbitrary example) because you believe God has put that on your heart, and I, as a sister in Christ, persist in offering you cigarettes (I don’t smoke ... this is hypothetical), after you have told me that you do not wish to be offered cigarettes, then I am sinning, IMO.
It is my belief that it is taught that we have a much greater responsibility towards one another than we, as Christians today, generally choose to accept.
Now, as for comedy ... I believe that it is a matter of conscience depending on your KNOWN audience (you cannot be held responsible for that concerning which you do not know).
I do not believe that there is a set rule of thumb other than walk by the Spirit and listen to what direction is given. It is a non-finite art, which is exactly what I believe it’s meant to be ... a life-long journey of learning to be in constant relationship with God.
So much a bigger calling than most of us accept. I also think that at different times of life it looks totally different ... sometimes it’s super spiritual, sometimes it’s spending years working on a direction you have already been given.
hahaha ... I’m sure that’s not quite what you expected as an answer ... lol ... sorry 😊
@Maria Jooste Love, LOVE your answer Maria! There are the sins we KNOW, and those we interpret, as you note on Jesus' sermon on the mount. "Thou shalt not kill", but for the man with anger and unforgiveness in his heart against his brother, he has already committed murder. You mention the attractive man and the 2 women with different "agendas" in their hearts. Again, spot on! The first look is free. The 2nd will cost you! Lol
Great perspective on comedy as well! Our mission verse is Colossians 3:23 "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters" It can be a difficult line to walk at time, but through the strength of the Holy Spirit we've done pretty good so far... and if not, the blood of Jesus has forgiven us! =)
Very cool ... I also love that verse and very strongly believe that we must work as to the Lord ... there is too much that goes wrong when we don’t.
I known from my own experience that, even when I’m working as to the Lord with all my heart, I still mess it up.
You are so right ... the blood of the Lamb covers us, and in time we learn, repent, and grow!
Looking forward to more from you guys!
You're a blessing to be here Maria! Thanks for your comments! We'll be putting up more posts, and you're welcome to start threads of your own too!
